Baby IQ blanket
Several studies have shown that high contrast colors help to develop the very young brain, and the sooner and more stimuli given the more synoptic connections are made, which may produce a smarter child. With that in mind here is a pattern I made for a baby afghan for my new niece Emily; I make no claims as to whether it will or will not make your child smarter.
You will need 16 oz. White, 8 oz each of black and red worsted weight yarn.
An "I" hook
GRANNY SQUARE: (This is the basic pattern) Ch 4, join to first ch to make circle.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc now and through out), working in ring made, 2 dc, ch 1, (3 dc, ch1) 3 times, join to 3rd ch of ch-3. (For row two only, each ch-1 space is worked as for a corner)
Rows 2 - 8: (general for all): use the following chart
If the color is the same as previous row |
If the color is different from previous row (no need to turn work) |
Ch 3, turn; work 2 dc in same ch-1 space, ch 1: in each ch-1 sp on side work 3 dc ch 1. For each corner work 3dc, ch1, 3 dc. Joins to 3rd ch of beg ch-3. |
Fasten off previous color and weave in ends. Attach new color to any side ch-1 with sl st, work 2 dc in same space, ch 1. Side: work 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch-1 sp Corner: work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1 in each corner space. Join to 3rd ch of beg ch-3. |
The patterns for the squares! Because it is so difficult to protray granny squares, please folow each row as color guides - not actual depictions of how the squares will look.
Work sixteen granny squares in the following color combinations – Arrange the squares in the pattern that appeals to your tastes.
